A swimming pool isn’t a cheap add-on to your backyard. It’s something that needs taking care of and does require quite a bit of time and maintenance. It isn’t something you can just leave until the last minute. During the colder months looking after the pool takes a bit of a back seat but it’s keeping up with it that makes it easier to transition from winter to spring.

There are a few ways to get the most out of your pool so it’s something that can be enjoyed to its fullest when the warmer seasons roll around. And not just when you suddenly realise it’s a week before the first of Spring and your pool is a mini graveyard of frogs and insects.

Here are 6 great tips for you to take up when you’re maintaining your swimming pool in colder seasons.

  1. The Level: Keep a vigilant eye on the water level. If the water drops beyond a certain point it can damage your pump. So make sure to check weekly that it’s where you want it to be.
  2. Algae: If you make sure to look after your pool right through the year you won’t have a problem with algae sneaking up on you. And if you do have algae chlorine and bromine are things you can use to get rid of it.
  3. PH Levels: When it comes to the PH levels of your pool you have to make sure it’s between 7.2 and 7.8 so that it’s clean and swim-worthy. You can check it once a week when you’re also checking the water levels. During the evening when there are no pool parties you can add the chlorine to make sure the PH levels stay in check.
  4. Pump It Up: A good pump will keep your swimming pool clean by circulating the water to remove debris, and it will also keep the water clarified.
  5. Brushing: Make sure you have the right brush for the type of pool you have. When checking your pool you can give it a good scrub with your brush if you notice any algae start to appear.
  6. Tennis: A tennis ball tossed into your pool isn’t a bad at all because it actually absorbs the oil from suntan lotion and oils. The suntan lotion and oils will turn your pool very dirty very quickly.

Here are a 3 things you can get the kids in winter season to do so they can enjoy the pool to the fullest in summer season:

  1. Swimming Lessons: Make sure your children and any of their friend’s visiting can all swim well, not so-so but well. It’s really important to school the kids on the importance of safety when it comes to swimming. It’s never too early to start teaching them.
  1. Respect: Having respect for water and its usage will go a long way when everyone has become water smart. It’s our most valued resource so teach them from a young age not to continuously dive-bomb and have water spraying everywhere.
  1. Maintenance: When you’re busy doing any maintenance on your pool get the kids involved so they can learn how to take of the swimming pool. Eventually, they’ll be able to do it all (when they’re old enough) for a bit of pocket money.

These are a few of the best tips when it comes to taking care of your backyard oasis. If you do all of this year-round you won’t have any worries when swimming season comes around. All you have to do is poor yourself something ice-cold, slather on some sunscreen and enjoy all your hard work.
